Maui Luau Parking and Drive Times

Every major Maui luau is on resort property with on-site self-parking or valet, and all of them are open to non-guests. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your check-in time. The drive that catches visitors out is South Maui to West Maui: Kihei or Wailea to a Kaanapali or Lahaina luau is 60 to 80 minutes at sunset-hour traffic, not the 45 minutes a map shows at midday. If your ticket includes an open bar, decide who is driving before you arrive.

The one timing mistake almost everyone makes

Luau check-in falls between roughly 4:30 PM and 5:45 PM. That is exactly the window when Honoapiʻilani Highway, the single coastal road connecting Central and South Maui to Lahaina and Kaanapali, carries its heaviest traffic of the day, from about 3 PM to 6 PM. You are driving to your luau in the same hour as everyone finishing work and everyone else driving to their luau.

Take whatever the map tells you at the moment you check it and add 30 minutes. Missing check-in is the one Maui luau mistake that cannot be fixed at the door: the imu ceremony happens early, seating is assigned as parties arrive, and at several venues a late arrival is treated as a no-show. See what time do Maui luaus start for venue-by-venue check-in times.

Drive times reflect typical late-afternoon sunset-hour traffic and can vary.

The practical takeaway: book a luau in your own region. A Wailea guest driving to Kaanapali spends nearly three hours in the car for a two-and-a-half-hour show. Both regions have excellent luaus. Browse them by area on the Maui luau locations hub.

Validation is not universal and resort parking policies change seasonally. Confirm parking when you book, and budget for a resort parking charge if validation is not stated.

In Kaanapali, walk instead of driving

The Kaanapali Beach Walk connects the Sheraton Maui, Westin Maui, Hilton Grand Vacations Maui and Hyatt Regency Maui along a single beachfront path. If you are staying at any Kaanapali resort and attending a luau at another, you can walk it in 10 to 20 minutes: no parking, no Honoapiʻilani Highway, and no designated driver problem. It is the single best logistics advantage of booking a Kaanapali luau, and it is the reason Kaanapali suits travellers who want the open bar without the drive home.

Getting home after the open bar

Three of the major Maui luaus include drinks in the ticket price, and the hosted bar runs for most of the evening. Our open bar guide covers what is included; this is the part that guide leaves open.

Rideshare on Maui is not Honolulu. Coverage in West Maui thins out noticeably after 9 PM, which is roughly when luaus let out and several hundred people want a car at the same moment from the same resort driveway. Plan for one of these, in order of reliability:

  1. Stay where you drink. Book a luau at, or walkable from, your own resort. This is why the Kaanapali Beach Walk and the Wailea resort corridor matter so much.
  2. Designate a driver before you leave the hotel. Decide in the room, not at the bar. Every venue that serves alcohol checks ID, and the drink tiers are generous.
  3. Pre-book a taxi or car service for a set pickup time. Ask the venue's host stand for the local operator they use; resort concierges book these routinely.
  4. Treat rideshare as the fallback, not the plan. It usually works. It reliably takes longer than you expect on a Friday or Saturday in Kaanapali.

If none of that is workable, Sugar Beach Sunset Luau in Kihei is a cash-bar event rather than an open bar, which makes it the simplest option for a group that has to drive back to Central or South Maui afterwards.

How early to arrive, by venue

Straight from each venue's own guest instructions:

LuauArrive
Myths of Maui, Royal Lahaina45 minutes before your check-in time
The Lū'au at Grand Wailea30 minutes early for the imu ceremony and pre-show cocktails
Drums of the Pacific, Hyatt Regency30 minutes early for the imu ceremony
Wailele Polynesian Luau, Westin MauiDoors open about 30 minutes before dinner service
Honuaula Luau, Wailea Marriott30 minutes early for the imu ceremony
Feast at Mokapu, Andaz Maui15 minutes before the posted seating time
Sugar Beach Sunset Luau, KiheiDoors at 4:30 PM; earlier is better for lawn position

One booking note that trips up groups: at Myths of Maui, seating together is only guaranteed if the whole party is booked in a single transaction. Book as one group, arrive as one group.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you park for a Maui luau?

On site. Every major Maui luau is staged on resort grounds with a self-parking lot, and Grand Wailea offers valet. All of them are open to non-guests, so you do not need to be staying at the resort to park there.

Is parking free at Maui luaus?

It varies by resort and changes seasonally. Several Kaanapali and Wailea luaus validate self-parking for luau guests. Andaz Maui validates at the luau host stand and the Hyatt Regency validates for non-guests, but validation is not universal. Confirm at booking and budget for a resort parking charge if it is not stated.

Do you need a car to get to a Maui luau?

Not if you book in your own resort area. In Kaanapali the Beach Walk connects the Sheraton, Westin, Hilton Grand Vacations and Hyatt Regency, so most guests can walk to a nearby luau in 10 to 20 minutes. Crossing between South Maui and West Maui does require a car, a taxi, or a car service.

How long does it take to drive from Kihei or Wailea to a Lahaina luau?

Allow 60 to 80 minutes at luau check-in time. Honoapiʻilani Highway is at its busiest between 3 PM and 6 PM, which is the same window luau guests are arriving. Midday map estimates are misleadingly short.

How do you get home after a luau with an open bar?

Designate a driver before you leave your hotel, pre-book a taxi or car service with the venue's host stand, or book a luau you can walk to. Rideshare coverage in West Maui thins after 9 PM, which is exactly when luaus finish.

How early should you arrive at a Maui luau?

Between 15 and 45 minutes before your check-in time, depending on the venue. Myths of Maui asks for 45 minutes; Grand Wailea, the Hyatt Regency and the Wailea Marriott ask for 30; Andaz Maui asks for 15. Arriving at doors open is also how you see the imu ceremony.
